A Tiny Art Journal Series // Journal #4

Another month has come & gone, and apparently it’s already halfway through May? How does time manage to pass so quickly, yet so slowly all at the same time? It feels like it’s still December, yet spring is here and summer is just around the corner.

April here is normally pretty cool, with the occasional snow thrown in for fun. This year we got an especially nice month of weather with little snow and my kids could wear sandals – this is a big deal (and I mean wear sandals when it’s nice, not like when Canadians insist it’s “spring” because it’s 5C out). Honestly, a sunny April in Calgary feels like a gift and we absolutely soaked it up.

This month’s tiny art journal is twice the size of last month’s small art journal at 3″ x 3″, and I made it from pages from an old accordion music book! I covered it with cardstock and leftover paint from a round of mono prints I did a while back.

This mini art journal took longer than the others because I really wanted to develop the textures and mood further. I used a mix of paint, tissue paper, and mark-making to build up the layers on each spread. I stayed within a blue and white palette and repeated the theme of rain, storms, clouds, and all that moody goodness. There is something so satisfying about working within a restricted palette. It forces you to get creative with texture and composition instead of leaning on colour to do all the work. The result is my favourite small art journal of the series so far.

If you are new here, I have been making one tiny art journal per month as a little creative challenge for myself. You can see tiny art journal number 1, number 2 and number 3 in previous posts.

This month, this mini art journal is aptly named April Showers. Enjoy!

This little book is totally fabulous, what a great idea and I love the way you present your pages. Given that I love each and every page, my favourites are 1, 8, 9 and 11 and the front and back covers. Top class!

I love this idea, especially the limited palette and theme, it really comes together nicely.

Thanks Clare! The limited palette was a challenge for me – but it was a worthwhile venture.

Hey girl! I used the same quote in one of my art journals this week. Great minds you know. It was the one about summer and rain. I love seeing your tiny journals each month. I am inspired to make my own. Thanks!
