DIY Stitched Card

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t make Valentine’s Day cards for the peeps in my life. I only give a card to Jason and he prefers a funny card from the store. Actually, I really like those silly cards too. We never get each other sentimental cards. It’s not really our style. We do get really silly cards and then write really sentimental things inside them. It’s a win-win – I get to laugh and cry! 😉

However I know that lots of people like to make something sweet for their special someone. This stitched heart is so easy to make. It literally took me 15 minutes to do. You could even do this with an older child to make for class valentines if you wanted to get ambitious.

You need:

– cardstock

– needle

– embroidery thread

– paper trimmer or scissors

Cut your cardstock down to 4 1/4″ by 5 1/2″ (essentially cut it in half horizontally), then score it down the middle so it folds all nice. If you do not have a paper trimmer, you will need to use a ruler & craft knife to lightly score your fold. You do not want to skip this step! Your card will fold all dumb if you do. You’ve been warned. You could make this any size you want, but I’ve found this way you get two cards per sheet of paper and nothing is wasted. Which is the best, amirite?

Using a template (or freehand this if you’re feeling brave, which I am not), use your needle to poke holes outlining the heart. Then use 3 strands of embroidery floss and a running stitch to stitch the outline. You could also do a backstitch if you didn’t want any spaces between stitches.

See? Easy as pie.
